Forbes: Santa Rosa Ranks #10 in Job Growth

In a recent Forbes article, “The Best Places for Business and Careers,” Santa Rosa was recently listed as #10 in job growth and #71 in education, and #86 overall. Here is a little insight from Paul Schwartz, Senior Sales Associate/Commercial Division as to why Santa Rosa earned this recognition.

The positive ranking of Santa Rosa as 86th on the top 200 best places for business and careers in the U.S. is likely attributable to several factors.

Firstly, the key to our economic strength is our business diversity. We have a very diverse economy, with the wine industry and tourism leading the way, in addition to other large sectors such as health care, financial and real estate services, retail, construction, technology firms and government/education. The mix of private companies that provide products and a supply chain as well as other support services (e.g. finance, marketing, graphics, barrels and corks) for the wine industry is very significant.

Hence, the medical and service (finance, real estate, banking, legal, government) industries attract from a large geographic region extending from Marin County to Mendocino and Lake Counties and further north. Tourists from throughout the world come for our world class wines and craft beers. Another significant factor is the expanding air service from the Sonoma County Airport to several cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, Seattle and Phoenix. This makes corporate business travel easy and our ability to attract employees very competitive as a result of our connections to other west coast cities and major markets. Our lower than average Bay Area cost of living means executives and employees have greater buying power for housing and services in Santa Rosa compared to other Bay Area cities that are significantly more expensive.

The Smart Train will also provide a great connection for employees wanting to commute up and down the 101 corridor to work and for tourists visiting wine country from Marin and other parts of the Bay Area.

The bike races have brought international attention to Santa Rosa and Sonoma County through ESPN coverage and over 5,000 cyclists converging on Santa Rosa for the annual Gran Fondo event. The Green Music Center has already become a nationally rrr-brew-coenowned facility for concerts, and the economic ripple effect of these events is in the millions of dollars each year. The repeat tourist business generated by these events and the Green Music Center is significant for the hotel industry, restaurants, retail and wine sales.

As new home construction picks up in Santa Rosa and surrounding Sonoma County cities, construction will once again become a major component of the employment and economic mix in Sonoma County.
